I just don't get it. No matter what I do the program doesn't respond. May be better than sliced bread, but you couldn't prove it by me. I'm just going to uninstall it. I'm really disappointed. I'm not normally technologically retarded. Still using Win XP SP3, Illustrator and PS CS3 and Painter 11.

I am trying to install Don Seegmiller's brushes from his book, Digital Character Design and Painting.(Charles River Media). I have Painter X, Windows 7.
I created a zip file fromn the CD and tried to drag that into the window. I get that error message you wrote about "brush category already installed", but I still haven't been able to get it up and running.

Installing a mal-formed brush ZIP file (see more information on the expected format) will show the “This brush category is already installed…” error message; however, the files from the ZIP are still extracted to the brush install location set in your settings. Upon reopening Painter, you’ll likely see the “30x30 icon” error. To fix the error, open your install location and delete the files added from the mal-formed ZIP.

------------------------------------------

The Studio|chris Brush Manager will NOT replace previous versions of the Brush Installer if you’ve installed them to your system in the past. The old Brush Installer may still be used; however, it will no longer be maintained as the code has been absorbed into the Brush Manager. You may uninstall the Brush Installer using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP, Control Panel > Programs and Features in Windows Vista or by deleting the application directory in Mac OS X (in /Applications/Studio-chris/). Additional program data or empty folders may be left on your system after an automated uninstallation. Extra folders may be deleted from your user folder in the following locations:

Windows XP

C:/Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/us.studiochris.brush-installer/

Windows 7

C:/Users/[username]/AppData/Roaming/us.studiochris.brush-installer/

Mac OS X

/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/us.studiochris.brush-installer/

------------------------------------------

The new settings are stored in a settings file located in the following locations per OS. Should your settings file become corrupt, exit the Brush Manager and delete the settings file. The settings file will be automatically regenerated on the next run.

Windows XP

C:/Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/us.studiochris.brush-manager/settings/settings.xml

Windows Vista

C:/Users/[username]/AppData/Roaming/us.studiochris.brush-manager/settings/settings.xml

Windows 7

C:/Users/[username]/AppData/Roaming/us.studiochris.brush-manager/settings/settings.xml

Mac OS X

/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/us.studiochris.brush-manager /settings/settings.xml

------------------------------------------

Selecting text in the settings panel, specifically the install path box may have a very noticeable lag when selecting text with the mouse. At present, there is no fix available – just go very slow or use a combination of mouse clicks and keyboard shortcuts to select text when needed. Standard OS text selection shortcuts are available (Ctrl/Cmd+A, C, V, X | Shift + Directional Arrows | Shift + Click | Single, Double & Triple Click). A right click menu is also available for the field with common “Edit” functions (Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete & Select All).

Automated updates to the Brush Manager are available in the Settings & Utilities panel. Installing updates are completely optional; however, it is recommended as new features and important bug fixes are included with the updates.

Studio|chris does not collect any personally identifiable information during the update process, even further, no information stored during the process. The update button merely checks the server to see if a new version is available by downloading a small file in the background. After checking the file, if an update is available, you'll be able to choose whether or not to download and install the update. The Brush Manager handles everything.

IMPORTANT: After you've started a download, the update process cannot be canceled.

On the first run, the new settings panel will open asking you to set your initial settings. Here’s what they do:

Detected Operating System: This setting is automatic and cannot be edited.

64-bit Checkbox (Windows Only): Users running a 64-bit version of Windows should check this box for to support the “Program Files (x86)” directory.

User Mode: This setting determines the default installation paths for installing brushes. ON places brushes in your User directory. OFF places brushes in Program Files for Windows and the Applications directory for Mac OS X.

IMPORTANT FOR WINDOWS VISTA & 7 USERS: Unless UAC is completely turned OFF, keep User Mode turned ON. Any brushes that are attempted to be installed to the Program Files directory will be redirected to a hidden location that is NOT available to Painter and will NOT show an error with the Brush Manager.

To quickly test the status of UAC, right click your desktop and choose Personalize. From the Personalization window, click “Adjust font size (DPI)” from the Tasks pane on the left (it should have a shield icon). If you are presented with a dialog to allow access, UAC is turned on. If you get no warning, UAC is turned off, and it is safe to run the Brush Manager with User Mode turned off.

Corel Painter Version: Choose your version of Painter. Windows XP and Mac OS X will see Painter 7 – X.1. Windows Vista & Windows 7 will see Painter IX – X.1.

Where to install brushes?: This is the most important setting of the entire application. On first run, this setting will say “no path yet.” After you’ve set all of your other settings, click the “Set to Default Location” button and a path will be generated automatically based on your settings. If you’ve installed Painter to the default location and system drive, this automatic setting should be correct.

If you find the path is not correct, or you’d like to install brushes to a particular brush library or workspace folder, check the “I’d rather install to a custom location” checkbox and the path will become editable so you can type path edits. You’ll also gain access to a Browse button which will let you choose a qualified path through your operating system’s Folder Browser dialog. If you make a mistake in choosing/creating a custom path, the Set to Default Location is always available for a quick reset.

The only strictly enforced setting in the Settings panel is the brush installation path. The installer will use a customized path, even if it contradicts the other settings. The majority of users should stick with the default locations set by the “Set to Default Locations” button or base installation paths on the defaults for the case of User folder vs. Program Files/Applications directory.

Settings are saved by clicking the Save and Close button in the Settings panel and also when exiting the application by using the “X” button in the title bar of the application or by double-clicking the application icon in the top left of the application window. Settings are not saved when exiting from the Taskbar or Task Manager in Windows or the Dock in Mac OS X.

One last feature of the Settings panel is the Copy Settings button beside the Save and Close button. Clicking this button does exactly what it says – It copies the current settings to your clipboard in a readable, sanitized format. The stored data may be pasted into any document or multi-line text area in online forms.

All support requests should include a copy of the current settings.

chrisprice on "Frequently Asked Questions [Brush Manager]"

"It doesn't work."

Help me out with this one. I need to know as much information as possible including your operating system, any messages you may be seeing, where you downloaded the brushes and anything you notice about the Brush Manager itself. Most problems point back to trying to use the Installer on a ZIP file that wasn't made for the Installer (see below with the XP screenshot). Incompatible ZIP files must be installed manually.

Built into the Brush Manager, version 0.6 and above, open the Settings panel and use the "Copy Settings" button to tell me all about your installation. No personal information is included in the generated report. Just paste it into your reply along with your question.

How do I Install the Studio|chris Brush Manager?

Visit the main page for the Brush Manager.

The installation is carried out through an installation badge powered by Adobe Flash Player 9+ and is located near the top of the page.

Manual installation is also available by installing the AIR runtime from Adobe and a manual download of the Brush Manager's installer (.air file).

I don't see the install badge. Where is it?

The install badge requires javascript to be enabled in your browser as well as the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player plugin. As a simple test, visit YouTube and watch a video as these are the same requirements for viewing videos on YouTube.

Where are the brushes installed?

Brushes are installed to the location you've set in the Settings panel. By using the "Set to a Default Location" button, new brushes will be installed to the default Painter Brushes library for your version of Painter.

I installed some brushes using the Installer, but they aren't showing up in Painter?

Chances are, the brush ZIP file used is not compatible with the Installer. Check your install location (from the Settings panel) in Explorer/Finder to make sure you have both the Category Icon JPG image and Brush Category folder in the Painter Brushes folder - NOT another subfolder.

ex. Den's Oil Brushes (Windows XP shown, but the structure is the same for all operating systems.)

If you have to click into another folder to see the category icon and the brush category folder, the ZIP file was not compatible and you'll need to move the category icon and category folder directly into the Painter Brushes folder for them to show up in Painter.

If you use a custom workspace, brushes will need to be installed into a brush library that is included with your workspace or into the brush library specific to your workspace.

Studio|chris is happy to announce the newest release of the Studio|chris Brush Installer, completely refreshed to become the Studio|chris Brush Manager – a dedicated solution to installing and maintaining Corel Painter brush libraries and categories. This release marks the first public release carrying the new Brush Manager name and . This is an exciting release because it brings in a lot of features requested by the community and brings compatibility to every version of Painter, all the way back to version 7 and also into the foreseeable future. The preliminary versions of the Brush Installer were merely a proof-of-concept – it’s time to get serious. Here’s what’s new:

*Refreshed user interface – The interface has undergone a massive overhaul to allow a simplified brush installation process and also allow for future updates to bring more functionality.
*The Drop Box - The three installation boxes of the previous version are gone and replaced with a single drop box that just works, no matter your operating system.
*Settings & Utilities Panel – Yes, the Brush Manager now has user settings. This brings in support for the 64-bit versions of Windows, multiple versions of Corel Painter, and custom install locations.
*Application Updates – Located in the Settings panel, users with an active internet connection may choose to install updates to the Brush Manager with two clicks – one to check for updates and one to download and install.

The Studio|chris Brush Manager (0.6.0001) is a free download available from the Studio|chris Brush Manager main page.

Adobe AIR 1.5

Mac OS X systems configured to automatically unzip downloaded ZIP files may not be able to use the installer due to the ZIP file structure being broken on download. To use the Brush Installer, ZIP files must remain zipped. Users affected by this configuration may re-zip the files into a ZIP file, but please note the known limitation below if using the native ZIP extension of OS X.

Automatically unzipped files are moved into the Trash and may be restored from there to use in the Brush Installer as well. To do this, open your Trash and drag the ZIP file back to your desktop. You may delete the automatically unzipped folder(s) and brush category icon(s).

KNOWN LIMITATION:

There may be errors when trying to install a brush category from ZIP files created in Mac OS X. ZIP files that cause errors will NOT install brushes. This is a known issue with the ZIP architecture used to process downloaded brush category ZIP files. For more information, please see this blog post and comments [technical content warning].

The Brush Manager expects the downloaded brush ZIP file to be organized like the Painter Brushes folder (because that’s where these brushes are going). One (1) brush category icon and one (1) brush category folder per brush category. These items must not be placed in a subfolder inside of the ZIP file. More than one brush category may be included per ZIP file, but the main structure must not be broken. The following diagram may be helpful. Later versions may support folder in a folder in a folder type ZIP files, but the current versions do not.

The Windows Vista drop area in versions *0.5.1b* & 0.5.2b includes a checkbox labeled "UAC is turned off." UAC, short for "User Account Control," is a security feature built into all flavors of Windows Vista.

IMPORTANT NOTE: 0.5.1b DOES NOT WORK ON VISTA WITH UAC TURNED ON. USERS SHOULD UPGRADE IMMEDIATELY TO 0.5.2b.

The most simple way to describe it is:

the thing that always asks "Are you sure you want to do that?" or "Your permission is needed..." when performing administrative tasks such as installing programs or Windows updates

Most users do have UAC activated as it is turned on by default, and it is not recommended by Microsoft to be turned off [although there is the option for more advanced users who may not need the type of protection, or annoyance, offered by UAC].
These users should NOT activate the checkbox, and the Brush Installer will not work if UAC is turned on and the checkbox is activated.

In these cases, brushes are installed to:

C:/Users/*your account username*/AppData/Roaming/CorelPainter X/Default/Brushes/Painter Brushes

In the event of an emergency reset of Painter (accomplished by holding the SHIFT key while starting Painter) any custom brushes installed to this directory will be erased. It is recommended to either regularly back up this folder or keep all custom brush ZIP files in a safe location for easy re-installation with the Brush installer at a later date.

The reason behind this feature is UAC adds other security features, including one that limits access to the Program Files folder by applications after it's own installation, which is one of the places where Painter Brushes are stored (and also where Corel recommends installing brushes to avoid loss of brushes during an emergency reset of Painter). Turning UAC off removes this limitation.

Under normal circumstances with Windows XP and Windows Vista with UAC turned off, brushes are installed into the default Painter Brushes Library in the Program Files folder:

C:/Program Files/Corel/Corel Painter X/Brushes/Painter Brushes

To tell the Brush Installer that UAC is turned off, simply activate the checkbox and brushes will be installed to the proper place in Program Files. Once again, this option will only work if UAC is actually turned off.

Two updates have been issues to address UAC compatibility. The most recent version as of this post (0.5.2b) is the only version that is completely compatible with UAC. If you are using a previous version, please install the update.

The Studio|chris Brush Installer version 0.5.2b introduces another compatibility fix for Microsoft Windows Vista (all versions). Vista users should upgrade immediately. Windows XP and Mac OS X users are unaffected by this update.

If installing this update, please uninstall previous versions using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows XP Control Panel or Programs and Features in Windows Vista. Mac users may uninstall by dragging the application in /Applications/Studio-Chris to the trash.

Barring other compatibility issues, the next version will include the settings panel as well as an automated update procedure.

How do I know which version is installed?

The version number is located in the user interface of the Brush Installer, below the application’s name.

"It doesn't work."

Guys (and gals), you have to help me out with this one, seriously. I need to know as much information as possible including your operating system, any messages you may be seeing, where you downloaded the brushes and anything you notice about the Installer itself. Most problems point back to trying to use the Installer on a ZIP file that wasn't made for the Installer (see below with the XP screenshot). Incompatible ZIP files must be installed manually.

How do I Install the Studio|chris Brush Installer?

Visit the main page for the Brush Installer and read the information on the application, especially since it is currently in the beta stage.

The installation is carried out through an installation badge powered by Adobe Flash Player 9 and is located below the screenshot of the Brush Installer.

I don't see the install badge below the screenshot. Where is it?

The install badge requires javascript to be enabled in your browser as well as the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player plugin. As a simple test, visit YouTube and watch a video as these are the same requirements for viewing videos on YouTube.

Where are the brushes installed?

Windows XP & Windows Vista with UAC disabled:

C:/Program Files/Corel/Corel Painter X/Brushes/Painter Brushes/

Windows Vista with UAC enabled:

C:/Users/*your account username*/AppData/Roaming/Corel/Painter X/Default/Brushes/Painter Brushes/

Mac OS X:

/Applications/Corel Painter X/Brushes/Painter Brushes/

If your main brush folder is in a different location, the installer will not work.

I installed some brushes using the Installer, but they aren't showing up in Painter?

Chances are, the brush ZIP file used is not compatible with the Installer. Check your Painter Brushes folder (depending on your operating system - see above) to make sure you have both the Category Icon JPG image and Brush Category folder in the Painter Brushes folder - NOT another subfolder.
