Greenwood, SC · Festival of Flowers

June 22, 2007 – June 24,2007

Every year, Greenwood, South Carolina, where Studio|chris is located, hosts one of the largest gardening festivals in the country. Park Seed, which is a nationally-known nursery and test garden opens its gates, gardens, and greenhouses to the public and thousands of people from all over the United States flock there to see the results of years of hybridizing tests to create the “ultimate” species of a flower, vegetable or generally any other type of plant. The test gardens are full of photographers, playing children, and green-thumbed adults looking to add to their own spectacular gardens.

In addition to the Park Seed festivities, private citizens in the Greenwood area open their gardens for guided tours. These tours showcase the best of the best gardens in Greenwood. Unusual specimen plants, beautifully “natural” landscapes, and blooms of every size shape and color can be seen. Every one I have had the pleasure of visiting has been a spectacular experience for all of the senses. The colors, smells, sounds and even the taste of the warm summer air blowing through the trees and through sweetly scented flowers can be almost like a dream.

Now, I’m sure some of you are asking, “why is he talking about a gardening festival on an art blog?” Added into the activites of the weekend is a HUGE arts and crafts showcase including vendors from across the state of South Carolina, a juried photography competition and exhibition hosted by FUJIFILM Manufacturing USA, Inc. (which is headquartered here in Greenwood), and a juried fine art competition and exhibition for local artists and art students hosted by the Greenwood County Arts Council. Studio|chris will not have a booth at the craftsmen’s showcase, but I will be entering both competitions.

First is the Juried Art Show, which I plan to enter the Siberian Husky Painting shown in an earlier entry. It is now completed, and if I may say so, it looks FABULOUS! It may be a little difficult to see in the blog entry, but wiskers have been added and a few other minor adjustments have been made. This regal Husky is sure to be a hit! Prints will be available soon in the Studio|chris Shop.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the deadline for this piece to be entered into the show was earlier than expected. :(

For the photography competition, I will be entering three digital photos for the Digital segment of the show. So far, I have chosen two, but have a few on my mind that are fighting for that last spot. The ones chosen so far are:

Fred the Tree Frog

Cascading Maple Leaves

Currently under debate are:

Greystreak Butterly
Golden Calendula
Net-winged Beetles on Taro
Red-spotted Purple Butterfly

Any suggestions for the last spot anyone, even if not listed above?

I’ll keep you all posted on the progress and results of the competion. I’m also sure I’ll be taking LOTS of photos to share during the festival. There is always so much to see!
